The brief was to provide a lighting design scheme for a reception area to a new multi storey office development in Canary Wharf, suitable for either a single tenant or multiple tenants. The lighting needed to reflect a modern corporate image with impact while addressing visitor path finding. The spatial proportion of the space was improved by lighting effects that where applied to vertical surfaces, created an architectural rhythm to emphasise key areas.
The issue of the tunnel-like space was solved by using light to divide it into zones: entrance, reception and waiting area. We used a highly efficient downlight for the general lighting in the entry area, in conjunction with a narrow beam downlight to create a scalloping pattern on the walls. By this means, we achieved both the correct light levels and a vertical light effect that draws the eye up along the height of the space.
The reception area received little natural daylight. A central ceiling feature with a lit dropped edge detail breaks the linear space into zones, while also acting as a visual indicator to the reception area. This location is enhanced by LED strips mounted into the black marble wall. This visual impact allows visitors to navigate the space with ease by virtue of a lighting emphasis on a focal point.
Two atria with soft seating formed the waiting area. Here, we integrated RGB colour change lighting to create a defined lighting approach for the seating area. The tenant was then able to introduce corporate branding through colour change. This lighting was integrated into the reception desk frontage, separating the space into zones, while bringing continuity to the various areas.
