Glentruim Castle is a large baronial Victorian property set in around 53 acres with far-reaching views across the Cairngorms National Park. We have been appointed to design two extensions and undertake the internal refurbishment of the house, working closely with our in-house Project Manager, M&E Engineer and Architect as well as a Glasgow-based landscape architect.
Built in 1840, the house has significant historic interest and is Grade B listed. The interior decoration will draw inspiration from the history of the house to give a feeling of drama, grandeur and individuality. Much of the existing decorative pieces will remain alongside new, carefully selected key pieces of furniture.
On completion, the house will be a prestigious private residence and country sports destination as well as a venue for weddings and corporate weekends. The layout will be carefully altered on the first floor to provide private bathrooms for each bedroom whilst maintaining the character of the interior spaces. The single storey extensions will be at either end of the house; an Orangery with a lantern roof and glazed doors, and a large kitchen and family room. The design has to integrate with the Scottish baronial-style architecture, whilst creating new light, airy and spacious rooms for formal use as well as relaxed living.
Our M&E Engineer will update the building services to support the new requirements of the property, such as plentiful hot water and heating to create a comfortable living environment that meets the standards demanded by the high end letting market. The listing and historic setting of the property make the planning application and approval process complex, so we are liaising early with the Highland Planning Authority and holding pre application meetings on site.
The project is due to complete in Autumn 2009.
