The brief

The existing reception area was poorly lit and fitted with dark surface finishes which gave the entrance an uninviting feel. As a result our brief was to open out the reception, connecting it to the main entrance and lift lobby to create an inviting, light and open space consistent with the overall ambience of the building.

The solution

We were appointed to provide multi-disciplinary design and project management services which included interior and lighting design. Using an integrated design approach, we worked together to revive and open out the space, achieved by improving the lighting levels both artificially and naturally, whilst creating a reception area with visual interest, overall impact and longevity.

The team assessed the space, retaining and enhancing the elements which worked well and upgrading those that detracted from it. The reception area was opened up by removing several wooden slats which enclosed the reception desk, as well as removing a frosted window treatment which covered an entire glazed panel to the front of the reception, obscuring views in and out. This frosting was replaced with a simple manifestation detail which then allowed natural daylight to flow freely into the space, making the desk visible and therefore welcoming to visitors.

The desk was replaced with one that was lower and curved, in light reflective materials which linked to those already used in the main lobby entrance. Grey laminate cupboard doors behind the reception desk were replaced with solid core white glossy acrylic ones, creating both a fresh, contemporary style and a light reflective surface. The existing quartz resin floor in the lobby area was retained but refreshed with an additional resin layer and top coat sealant to ensure longevity. Carpet was introduced into the reception area to create a softer, more alluring feel. Finally two new arm chairs replaced the tired sofa, adding a splash of vibrant colour to the space to unite the finishes and complete the refurbishment.

Special features

1. An integrated lighting design and interior design solution which enhanced natural light, introduced warmth through artificial light and accented the detail with new surface finishes and colour.

2. Imaginative and creative use of a restricted budget to transform this space.
