The brief

The Quartermile scheme will transform the 19-acre site of the former Royal Infirmary, occupying a landmark position within Edinburgh's World Heritage site. The Masterplan provides over 900 apartments in new and period buildings, over 30,000 sq m of new office accommodation, over 10,000 sq m of retail and leisure space and 7 acres of open landscaping to roll The Meadows back into the city. GIA was asked by the architects to carry out a daylight and sunlight assessment internal to the scheme itself, to ensure that there were acceptable levels of daylight and sunlight to the new-build components of the scheme.

The solution

GIA's internal daylight and sunlight team of consultants and CAD analysts worked with the architects directly to resolve the internal daylight and sunlight issues in order to provide a scheme which provided good daylight and sunlight internal amenity. This resulted in revised room layouts, window positions and orientation of the buildings, allowing significantly improved levels of daylight and sunlight within the scheme and the open spaces around it. In essence, the development will achieve its objective to "blend the capital's heritage with striking new buildings to create an exciting residential and business community".

Special features

1. GIA optimised the internal daylight and sunlight to the new build residential units which will result in lighter, more attractive spaces for those living in them.

2. GIA's large team of CAD analysts undertook analysis of hundreds of rooms, delivering the results on time and to specification.

3. Early stage advice allowed the scheme to be enhanced and enabled the architect to make scheme improvements to the internal facilities.
